Cautious sentiment returned as traders digest quarterly results from Nvidia, with the company reporting earnings that surpassed quarterly estimates but sales forecast for the current period didn’t match some of the more optimistic forecasts. In addition, escalations in the Russia-Ukraine conflict and the economic and monetary outlook in Europe continue to weigh on investors' mood. The auto sector was under pressure, namely Porsche (-1.9%), BMW (-1.3%), Mercedes-Benz (-0.8%) and VW (-0.6%). Meanwhile, negotiations between VW management and labor unions are ongoing as they work to reach an agreement on wages. Fresenius (1.8%) was among the top performers.

Automotive stocks were among the early decliners, with Stellantis down 1.7% and Iveco falling 1.4%. Stellantis announced new temporary stoppages at two of its plants in southern Italy. The luxury sector also faced pressure, as Moncler shed 2.2% and Brunello Cucinelli dropped 1%.

The CAC 40 fell 0.5% to 7,163 on Thursday, marking its third consecutive session of losses as cautious sentiment prevailed. Investors continued to weigh escalating tensions in the Russia-Ukraine conflict alongside the broader economic and monetary outlook in Europe. Most stocks in the index traded in the red, with Teleperformance and Kering leading losses, each down 1.7%. Stellantis NV also fell 1.6% to a three-week low after announcing a delay in the launch of its Ram EV trucks to fiscal year 2025. Additionally, Vivendi and Bouygues both shed 1.4%. On the upside, Thales gained 0.6%, while Eurofins Scientific saw a modest increase of 0.4%.

The annual inflation rate in Hong Kong slowed to 1.4% in October 2024 from 2.2% in the previous month. This marked the lowest inflation rate since May, as prices moderated for food (0.9% vs 1% in September), housing (1% vs 3.3%), and miscellaneous services (1.9% vs 2%). At the same time, deflation worsened for durable goods (-0.7% vs -0.4%). Meanwhile, costs accelerated for electricity, gas and water (8.5% vs 6.5%), alcoholic drinks and tobacco (21.8% vs 21.4%), miscellaneous goods (1.6% vs 1.2%), and transport (1.6% vs 1%). Moreover, deflation eased for clothing and footwear (-1.4% vs -1.6%). On a monthly basis, consumer prices edged up to 0.2% in October from 0.1% in the preceding month.
