The S&P/TSX Composite climbed roughly 0.3% to clear the 27,370 level on Monday, closing in on record highs as renewed trade-deal optimism and strong gains by metarials equities lifted the Toronto exhcange. US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick expressed confidence that Washington and Brussels could strike an agreement before the August 1st tariff deadline, bolstering hopes that Canada’s exporters, particularly in energy, metals and agriculture, will face fewer headwinds in key overseas markets. At the same time, a rally in bullion lifted major miners, Agnico Eagle, Wheaton Precious Metals, Barrick Gold and Franco-Nevada all advanced between 1.5% and 3%, on rising gold prices. Domestically, Statistics Canada reported that the Industrial Product Price Index rose 0.4% month-over-month in June, while the Raw Materials Price Index surged 2.7%, led by strength in energy inputs and non-ferrous metals.
