Bank of Japan (BoJ) may consider policy action if U.S. tariffs harm Japan’s economy, Governor Kazuo Ueda said in an interview with the Sankei newspaper. “A policy response may become necessary,” he said, noting that risks from U.S. President Trump’s trade measures have moved “closer towards the bad scenario” the central bank had anticipated. Ueda acknowledged that recent developments are already weighing on corporate and household sentiment. While the board still plans to raise rates “at an appropriate pace,” Ueda stressed the importance of assessing the economic impact of U.S. tariffs without preconceptions. The governor added that domestic food inflation is likely to ease, real wages are expected to rise mid-year, and both upside and downside risks remain for the inflation outlook. The BoJ will hold a monetary policy meeting at its April 30–May 1, when it will also release updated economic forecasts.
