The Confederation of British Industry's monthly net balance of new orders increased to -28 in February 2025 from -34 in January, beating market expectations of -30. Looking ahead, manufacturers are more optimistic, expecting a modest rise in volumes in the three months to May. Still, total order books remained below average (-36) and export orders were largely unchanged (-36 vs -38). Selling price inflation expectations eased compared to January but stayed above historical levels. Output fell in 16 out of 17 sub-sectors, with the steepest declines in glass & ceramics, building materials, and metal manufacturing. CBI’s Ben Jones attributed the downturn to weak domestic and international confidence but noted that firms anticipate a rebound, partly driven by the need to rebuild inventories. He emphasized the government’s role in fostering growth through an industrial strategy and skills reforms, highlighting ongoing business struggles with high costs and energy prices.
