Gold dipped to around $3,380 per ounce on Friday, retreating from a two-week high as investors took profits. Still, the metal is on track for a second straight weekly gain, supported by trade tensions and expectations of a more dovish US monetary policy. President Trump’s sweeping tariffs of 10% to 50% took effect, targeting dozens of countries, alongside a separate announcement of a 100% tariff on imported semiconductors. Meanwhile, Minneapolis Fed President Kashkari voiced support for rate cuts amid signs of a slowing economy, as jobless claims exceeded forecasts and continuing claims reached a three-year high. Adding to gold’s appeal, the US imposed tariffs on one-kilo and 100-ounce gold bars to reduce reliance on imports, especially from Switzerland, a move that may tighten domestic supply and lift prices. Elsewhere, China extended its gold purchases to a ninth straight month in July.
