Pakistan’s wholesale prices fell by 1.0% year-on-year in August 2025, worsening from a 0.49% decline in the previous month. The drop was mainly driven by deeper deflation in agriculture, forestry, and fishing (-3.88% vs. -1.60% in July) and in minerals, electricity, gas, and water (-6.06% vs. -3.41%). Conversely, these declines were partially offset by faster price growth in food, beverages, tobacco, textiles, and leather products (4.94% vs. 4.37%) and in metal products, machinery, and equipment (1.21% vs. 0.48%), along with a slower decline in other transportable goods (-2.71% vs. -3.40%). On a monthly basis, wholesale prices fell 0.21% in August, reversing a 1.19% gain in July.

Pakistan’s annual inflation eased to 3.0% in August, the slowest in four months, slowing from 4.1% in July, driven by slower price increases across several categories, including clothing and footwear (8.1% vs. 8.4% in July), transport (2.5% vs. 2.7%), alcoholic beverages and tobacco (3.6% vs. 3.7%), health (10.6% vs. 10.8%), restaurants and hotels (7.2% vs. 7.7%), and miscellaneous goods and services (14.4% vs. 14.9%), alongside a decline in food and non-alcoholic beverages (-1.8% vs. 0.9%) and a further drop in recreation and culture (-2.3% vs. -1.5%). In contrast, prices accelerated in furnishing and household equipment maintenance (3.5% vs. 3.3%) and education (10.9% vs. 10.2%), while housing and utilities remained stable at 3.6%. On a monthly basis, consumer prices fell 0.6% in August, reversing the 2.9% increase in July.

Moody's Global Ratings upgraded Pakistan's credit rating on Wednesday to "Caa1" from "Caa2", with the outlook revised to stable from positive, citing an improving external financial position. "The upgrade to Caa1 reflects Pakistan’s improving external position, supported by its progress in reform implementation under the IMF Extended Fund Facility (EFF) program," the agency said in a statement. Moody’s decision to raise Pakistan's rating by one notch follows S&P Global Ratings' decision on July 24 to upgrade Pakistan's rating to B- from CCC+. Previously, Fitch Ratings, in April, also upgraded its rating of Pakistan to B- from CCC+. Both S&P and Fitch maintain a stable outlook on Pakistan. Pakistan says its economy is on a recovery path after a USD 7 billion IMF bailout helped stabilize it.
