The benchmark KOSPI rose 0.44% to close at 3,183 on Wednesday, recovering from earlier losses, driven primarily by strong foreign buying and a rally in auto shares. Foreign investors remained net buyers for a third straight session, with sustained inflows helping lift market sentiment and support the Korean won. The upturn was further fueled by a US–Japan trade deal that imposes a 15% tariff on Japanese auto exports to the US, raising expectations for South Korean automakers to gain market share. Hyundai Motor (+4.6%) and Kia Corporation (+5.6%) led the gains along with other firms such as LG Energy Solution (+0.9%) and Doosan Enerbility (+1.3%). Rising corporate FX deposits signaled strong export activity and improved liquidity, boosting confidence in listed firms and supporting equity inflows. Meanwhile, the government dispatched senior officials to Washington for consultations on the deal’s implications, reflecting proactive diplomacy, which also reinforced investor confidence.
