The annual inflation rate in Austria climbed to 3.6% in July 2025, slightly above initial estimates of 3.5% and the previous month’s 3.3%. This marked the highest reading since March last year, mainly driven by faster price increases of food and non-alcoholic beverages (5.2% vs 4.7% in May), housing and utilities (5.7% vs 5.2%), and miscellaneous goods and services (4.7% vs 3.6%). Additionally, costs declined at a slower pace for clothing and footwear (-0.2% vs -3.2%). On the other hand, inflation softened for furnishings, household equipment, and maintenance (0.1% vs 0.3%) and recreation and culture (3.9% vs 4.3%), while it decreased faster for communications (-7.1% vs -6.3%). On a monthly basis, consumer prices rose by 0.3% in July, slowing from a 0.5% gain in the preceding period.

Industrial production in Austria grew by 0.6% year-on-year in June 2025, following an upwardly revised 1.1% increase in the previous month. Production grew significantly for consumer non-durables (6.3% vs 2.7% in May) and intermediate goods (6.1% vs 3.0%). Additionally, production fell at a softer pace for consumer durables (-9.6% vs -13.5%). Meanwhile, output declined further for energy (-7.9% vs -4.9%), while production eased for capital goods (0.6% vs 3.4%). On a seasonally adjusted monthly basis, industrial output fell by 0.2% in June, easing from a downwardly revised 0.4% decline in the preceding period.

Austria’s trade deficit widened to EUR 0.76 billion in May 2025, from EUR 0.40 billion in the corresponding month of the previous year, as imports rose while exports declined. Imports increased by 0.9% year-on-year to EUR 15.93 billion, driven primarily by a 6.8% increase in chemical products and a 0.9% rise in processed goods, which more than offset an 18.1% slump in fuels and energy. Imports grew for non-EU countries (+3.0%), but declined for EU countries by (-0.2%). Meanwhile, exports fell by 1.6% to EUR 15.17 billion, mainly due to lower shipments of fuels and energy (-19.5%), followed by chemical products (-9.2%). Exports decreased to non-EU countries (-9.9%), while shipments increased to EU countries (+2.5%).

Wholesale prices in Austria declined by 0.1% year-on-year in July 2025, reversing a 0.2% increase in the previous month. The renewed drop was attributed to falling prices in fuels and industrial inputs, with the largest annual declines recorded for waste and scrap (-11.6%), solid fuels (-10.2%), other liquid and gaseous fuels and related products (-8.5%), plastics and rubber in primary forms (-7.7%), and motor spirit (-6.3%). These declines were partially offset by strong annual price increases for coffee, tea, cocoa, and spices (+28.7%), watches and jewellery (+18.9%), live animals (+16.5%), and non-alcoholic beverages (+9.7%). Prices also rose for fruits and vegetables (+7.7%), meat and meat products (+6.0%), and dairy products, eggs, edible oils, and fats (+5.7%). On a monthly basis, wholesale prices increased by 0.2% in July, the second month of gain, albeit at a slower pace compared to the 0.6% gain in the prior period.
