The gross domestic product in Romania expanded by 0.3% year-on-year in the second quarter of 2025, the same pace as in the previous three-month period but fell short of market expectations of a 0.6% growth, preliminary estimates showed. This marked the seventeenth consecutive month of economic expansion but the softest pace in the sequence. On a seasonally adjusted quarterly basis, the country’s economy grew by 1.2% in the second quarter, marking the strongest growth since Q4 2022 and accelerating from an upwardly revised 0.1% rise in the previous period.

Industrial production in Romania declined by 0.8% year-on-year in June 2025, reversing an upwardly revised 4% increase in the previous month. Output fell for manufacturing (-0.7% vs 4.5% in May), while it slowed for both electricity, gas, steam, and air conditioning supply (0.3% vs 7.1%) and mining and quarrying (0.1% vs 0.5%). On a monthly basis, industrial output dropped by 1% in June 2025, following a 0.4% fall in the previous month.

Romania’s current account deficit narrowed to EUR 1,893 million in June 2025 from EUR 3,072 million in the corresponding month of the previous year, marking the smallest gap since January. The improvement was driven by smaller deficits in the goods account (EUR -2,464 million vs EUR -2,676 million in June 2024) and the primary income account (EUR -805 million vs EUR -1,304 million). In addition, the services surplus edged up to EUR 949 million from EUR 924 million, while the secondary income balance swung to a surplus of EUR 428 million from a deficit of EUR 15 million. Considering the first half of the year, the country's current account gap widened to EUR 13,897 million from EUR 11,682 in the same period last year.

Romania’s annual inflation rate rose to 7.84% in July 2025 from 5.66% in the previous month, exceeding market expectations of a 6.4% increase. This marked the highest reading since October 2023, driven by a sharp rise in prices for non-food products, which advanced to 8.18% from 3.9% in June. Costs also edged higher for food products (7.67% vs 7.36%) and services (7.33% vs 7.05%). On a monthly basis, consumer prices climbed 2.68% in July, the fastest pace in over three years, from 0.45% in the prior month.
