Belgium’s consumer confidence indicator held steady at -4 in July 2025, unchanged from the previous month and remaining above its long-term average. The figure also matched the highest level since February, as consumers expressed improved assessments of their future financial situation (–2 vs –3 in June). However, optimism faded around broader macroeconomic conditions. Sentiment toward the general economic outlook became slightly more pessimistic (–26 vs –24), and expectations for unemployment worsened marginally (7 vs 6), reflecting increased concerns about future job prospects. As in the previous month, households’ intentions to save remained unchanged at 19. Overall, the July results point to a stabilization in consumer sentiment after strong gains earlier in the year, though growing economic uncertainty and labor market concerns are beginning to weigh on confidence.

Belgium’s construction output decreased by 0.9% year-on-year in May 2025, reversing a downwardly revised 6.2% growth in the previous month. Declines were seen across all sectors, namely building construction (-1.4% vs 4.2% in April), civil engineering works (-0.5% vs 4.9%), and specialized construction activities (-0.7% vs 6.1%). On a seasonally adjusted monthly basis, construction activity dropped by 2.2% in May, after a downwardly revised 1.6% rise in April.

Belgium’s trade surplus narrowed sharply to EUR 1,786 million in May 2025 from EUR 2,707.1 million in the corresponding month of the previous year, as exports dropped more than imports. Exports declined by 6.2% year-on-year to EUR 40,259 million, weighed down by lower outbound shipments to non-EU (-11.5%) and EU countries (-3.6%). Meanwhile, imports fell at a softer 4.3% to EUR 38,473 million, with reduced purchases from both non-EU (-5.4%) and EU countries (-3.6%). Considering the January to May period, the country recorded a surplus of EUR 10,442.4 million, expanding from EUR 9,150.4 million in the same period last year.
