Latvia's trade deficit widened to EUR 381.3 million in December 2024, from EUR 359.9 million in the same month last year, as exports dropped more than imports. Exports declined 4.5% year-on-year to EUR 1,451.4 million, attributed to lower sales of electrical machinery and equipment (-11%), machinery and mechanical appliances (-17.8%), beverages, spirits and vinegar (-21.9%), and cereals (-56.7%). Shipments to CIS countries (-23.7%) and other countries (-11.9%) fell, while exports to the EU (0.7%) rose slightly. Meanwhile, imports decreased 2.5% to EUR 1,832.7 million, amid reduced purchases of electrical machinery and equipment (-6.7%), pharmaceutical products (-7.8%), beverages, spirits and vinegar (-16.9%), and optical instruments and apparatus (including medical) (-21.9%). Imports from CIS countries (-34%) and other countries (-32.3%) dropped significantly, while arrivals from the EU (5.3%) increased.
