Malta’s trade deficit widened to EUR 341.9 million in December 2024 from EUR 235.9 million in the corresponding month of the previous year. Imports grew by 12.2% year-on-year to EUR 728.9 million, primarily attributed to higher purchases of industrial supplies (7%), capital goods and others (26.8%), consumer goods (4.7%), and fuels and lubricants (13.4%). Meanwhile, exports dropped by 6.5% from a year earlier to EUR 387 million, mainly due to lower sales of capital goods and others (-36.7%), consumer goods (-20.8%), and fuels and lubricants (-12.6%). However, sales increased for industrial supplies (12.1%). Considering the whole period of 2024, the country’s trade deficit widened to EUR 4,634.2 million from EUR 4,097.9 million in the corresponding period of the previous year.
