Malta’s trade shortfall shrank to EUR 273.2 million in May 2025 from EUR 388.7 million in the corresponding month of the previous year. Imports plunged by 23.3% year-on-year to EUR 638 million, mainly due to lower purchases of mineral fuels, lubricants and related materials, and machinery and transport equipment. Meanwhile, exports fell by 17.6% to EUR 365 million, largely on account of mineral fuels, lubricants and related materials, and machinery and transport equipment, partly offset by an increase in chemicals. Considering the first five months of 2025, the country's trade deficit narrowed to EUR 1,492.2 million from EUR 1,622.5 million in 2024, as exports slipped by 10.9% to EUR 1,785 million and imports fell 9.6% to EUR 3,278 million. Goods were imported mainly from the European Union (60.3% of total purchases) and Asia (21.0%). Exports were mostly directed to the European Union (36.1% of total shipments) and Asia (12.9%). Notably, those to the US saw a steep decline (-65.9%).
