Sri Lanka’s Services PMI rose to 70.1 in July 2025 from 61.9 in June, signaling accelerated expansion in the sector. All sub-indices contributed positively, with wholesale and retail trade, financial services, and transportation driving growth. Other sectors showing gains included personal services, postal activities, programming and broadcasting, telecommunication, accommodation, food and beverage services, and healthcare. New Businesses increased to 64.9 from 62.9, led by wholesale, retail, and financial services. Employment rose to 59.8 from 51.6 as firms hired to meet higher demand, while Backlogs of Work edged up to 51.1. Expectations for business activity over the next three months improved to 80.7 from 75.8, supported by favorable macroeconomic conditions.

Sri Lanka’s Manufacturing PMI rose to 62.2 in July 2025 from 51.9 in June, signaling strong expansion in manufacturing activities. All sub-indices contributed positively, with New Orders (67.5 vs 50.5) and Production (66.5 vs 52.6) driven by robust performances in food and beverages and textiles and apparel. Employment (55 vs 49) returned to positive territory, while Stock of Purchases (59.5 vs 50.5) rose alongside Production and New Orders. Suppliers’ Delivery Time (55.6 vs 58.2) remained extended. The sector remains optimistic for the next three months but cautious amid global trade uncertainties.

The Central Bank of Sri Lanka (CBSL) expects the country’s economy to grow by 4.5% in 2025, exceeding the World Bank’s forecast of 3.5%. However, in its latest monetary report, the central bank warned that external demand conditions and the evolving global economic landscape introduce uncertainty into the country's near- to medium-term growth outlook. Sri Lanka is also continuing talks with the United States after it imposed 20% tariffs last month, reduced from 44% in April. In 2024, Sri Lanka’s GDP grew by 5%, marking a strong recovery from the severe financial crisis three years ago, supported by a USD 2.9 billion bailout package from the International Monetary Fund (IMF). Meanwhile, the CBSL report projected that inflation will continue to accelerate and reach the central bank’s target of 5% by mid-2026, supported by improving demand conditions.

The number of foreign tourists arrivals in Sri Lanka rose by 6.6% year-on-year to 200,244 in July 2025, following a 21.8% advance in the previous month. Among key markets, India (18.5%) remained the top tourist source market, followed by the United Kingdom (11.7%), Netherlands (7.8%), China (6.5%), France (5.5%), and Germany (5.3%). Considering the January to July period, the number of foreign tourists increased by 14.2% compared to the corresponding period of the previous year, reaching 1,368,288. On a monthly basis, foreign tourist arrivals climbed by 44.9%.
