Venezuela’s National Assembly on Thursday approved a state of economic emergency decree proposed by President Nicolás Maduro in response to escalating U.S. sanctions and tariffs. The move follows the Trump administration’s March decision to suspend authorizations for oil firms working with state-owned PDVSA and to impose secondary tariffs on Venezuelan oil and gas exports. Signed by Maduro Tuesday, the decree grants broad powers to boost economic growth, curb inflation, lure investment, and launch import-substitution policies. VP and Oil Minister Delcy Rodríguez said the decree aims to help national production amid U.S. pressure, noting oil and gas output continues despite a 30% price drop. “International producers are welcome,” she said, provided they comply with Venezuelan laws. The U.S. has given companies like Chevron, Eni, and Repsol until May 27 to exit Venezuela. Maduro, calling the sanctions an “economic war,” has issued similar decrees, with the last one extended through 2021.
