Mauritius’s trade deficit widened to MUR 16.9 billion in January 2025 from MUR 14 billion in the same month of the previous year. Year-on-year, exports soared by 43.5% to MUR 9.1 billion, mainly driven by higher sales of animals and vegetable oils, fats and waxes (633.3%), other commodities & transactions (147.7%), and machinery and transport equipment (104.9%). Meanwhile, imports climbed by 27.5% to MUR 26 billion, primarily boosted by higher purchases of animals and vegetable oils, fats and waxes (175.8%), beverages and tobacco (146.2%), and crude materials, inedible, except fuels (95.4%).
