China’s surveyed unemployment rate edged down to 5.1% in April 2025, compared to both market expectations and the previous month’s figure of 5.2%. This marked the lowest reading since December 2024. The jobless rate among the locally registered labor force fell to 5.2%, while the rate for the non-locally registered labor force was lower at 4.8%. Within this group, individuals with agricultural registration saw an even lower jobless rate of 4.7%. Across 31 major cities, the urban surveyed unemployment rate also stood at 5.1%. Meanwhile, the average weekly working hours for employees in enterprises nationwide reached 48.3 hours. For the first four months of the year, the national urban surveyed unemployment rate averaged 5.2%.

China’s fixed-asset investment rose by 4% year-on-year in the January–April 2025 period, less than market expectations of a 4.2% growth. Infrastructure investment grew by 5.8%, while manufacturing investment rose by 8.8%. However, real estate investment continued to decline, dropping 10.3%. By industry, investment in the primary industry increased by 13.2%, the secondary industry grew by 11.7%, while the tertiary industry edged down by 0.2%. Excluding the property sector, fixed-asset investment expanded by 8% in the first four months of the year. On a monthly basis, fixed-asset investment was up by 0.10%.

The Australian dollar rose to around $0.642 on Monday, paring losses from recent sessions as investors awaited the Reserve Bank of Australia’s policy decision. The RBA is widely expected to resume its easing cycle by cutting the benchmark interest rate by 25 basis points on Tuesday. However, stronger-than-expected labor market data last week has tempered expectations for further rate cuts. The recent easing of the US-China trade conflict has also reduced the likelihood of a more aggressive policy response from the central bank. As a result, markets now anticipate 75 basis points of cuts by year-end, down from 100 basis points projected just weeks ago. Meanwhile, April’s slowdown in Chinese retail sales highlights ongoing weakness in consumer demand, raising concerns for Australia’s largest trading partner and signaling potential risks to export performance. However, these worries were eased somewhat by stronger-than-expected industrial output and easing jobless rates.
