Malaysia’s leading economic index declined by 1.2% month-on-month in January 2025, shifting from a 0.8% growth in the previous month and marking the first drop since October. Four out of seven components of the index were down: real imports of other basic precious and non-ferrous metals (-0.6% vs 0.1% in December), the Bursa Malaysia Industrial Index (-0.5% vs 0.3%), real imports of semiconductors (-0.3% vs 0.1%), and the number of housing units approved (-0.1% vs 0.2%). At the same time, real money supply was subdued (-0.04% vs 0.1%). On the other hand, the expected sales value for manufacturing rose (0.2% vs -0.1%), alongside the number of new companies registered (0.1% vs 0.1%). On an annual basis, the leading index rose by 0.4%, much slower than a 3.4% gain in December. Meanwhile, the coincident index, which measures overall current economic performance, fell by 1.4%, following an upwardly revised flat reading in December.
