Latvia’s trade deficit widened to EUR 356 million in September 2025, up from EUR 248 million a year earlier, as imports surged 13.5% to EUR 2,091 million, driven by higher purchases of machinery and mechanical appliances, electrical equipment, vehicles, chemicals, mineral products, and vegetables. Meanwhile, exports increased more slowly, rising 8.8% to EUR 1,735 million, supported by higher sales of vehicles, vegetables, live animals and animal products, wood and wood products, and base metals.

The annual inflation rate in Latvia rose to 4.3% in October 2025, from 4% in September, the highest since August 2023. Prices increased at a faster pace for housing (6.2% vs 4.1% in September), miscellaneous goods and services (4.5% vs 1.4%), and health (4% vs 3.7%). Meanwhile, inflation was steady for transport (at 2.6%) and recreation and culture (at 2.3%). On the other hand, cost slowed for food (5.6% vs 6.8%), alcohol and tobacco (2.4% vs 3.9%), clothing and footwear (1.4% vs 1.6%), communication (3% vs 3.3%) and restaurants and hotels (5.4% vs 5.7%). On a monthly basis, consumer prices rose by 0.4% in October, after a 0.2% increase in September.

Latvia’s industrial production rose 6.5% year-on-year in September 2025, accelerating from a downwardly revised 2.3% gain in August. The increase was largely driven by faster manufacturing growth (+8.5% vs +4.1% in August), led by wood and wood products (+9.8%), food products (+10.9%), and fabricated metal products, excluding machinery and equipment (+13.3%). Other notable gains were seen in motor vehicles, trailers and semi-trailers (+31.4%), rubber and plastic products (+17.6%), and printing and reproduction of recorded media (+17.0%). In contrast, output fell in beverages (-11.8%), textiles (-2.0%), and clothing (-1.5%). A slower decline in electricity and gas supply (-0.6% vs -1.2%) also supported overall output, while mining and quarrying production contracted further (-28.1% vs -23.9%). On a seasonally adjusted monthly basis, industrial output rebounded 1.7% in September, following a revised 2.5% drop in August.

Retail sales in Latvia rose 2.6% year-on-year in September 2025, slowing from an upwardly revised 4.4% increase in August. The deceleration was mainly driven by weaker growth in non-food products (5.5% vs 9.5%), including softer gains in sub-categories such as electrical household appliances (10.7% vs 24.0%), cultural and recreational goods (12.3% vs 16.0%), clothing and footwear (4.0% vs 12.7%), and a decline in hardware, paints and glass (-0.2% vs 13.4%). Offsetting these declines were faster increases in information and communication equipment (2.2% vs 1.6%), pharmaceutical and medical goods (9.6% vs 8.1%), and a rebound in cosmetics (5.7% vs -2.3%). In contrast, sales rose more sharply in automotive fuel (0.8% vs 0.4%), while sales declined at a slower pace in food, beverages and tobacco (-0.4% vs -0.8%). On a monthly basis, retail trade fell 0.7% in September, reversing a revised 0.9% gain in August and ending a three-month growth streak.
