Producer prices in Latvia fell by 0.6% year-on-year in July 2025, following a downwardly revised 0.8% decline in the previous month. This marked the second consecutive month of producer deflation, driven by slower cost growth in water supply, sewerage, waste management, and remediation activities (8.8% vs 9.3% in June) and in the manufacturing sector (1.6% vs 1.7%), as well as a smaller decline in electricity, gas, steam, and air-conditioning supply (-13.1% vs -14.7%). In contrast, costs rose faster in mining and quarrying (9.6% vs 8.5%). On a monthly basis, producer prices fell 0.1% in July, marking the fifth straight monthly decline and easing from a revised 0.8% drop in June.

The unemployment rate in Latvia declined to 6.7% in the second quarter of 2025, the lowest level since Q3 2024, down from 7.4% in the previous quarter. The number of unemployed persons fell 8.4% quarter-on-quarter to 63.7 thousand, while employed individuals edged up 2.5% to 889.3 thousand. Joblessness decreased for both men (-13.6%) and women (1.7%). The share of long-term unemployed—those out of work for 12 months or more—slipped to 33.3% from 33.6% in Q1. Meanwhile, 30.4% of the population aged 15–74 was economically inactive in Q2 2025, slightly down from 31.7% in the previous quarter.

Latvia’s current account deficit widened to EUR 296 million in June 2025 from EUR 152 million in the same month of the previous year, driven by a larger goods trade gap and a weaker services surplus. The goods deficit rose to EUR 473 million from EUR 344 million a year earlier, and the services surplus narrowed to EUR 161 million from EUR 200 million. Additionally, the secondary income surplus fell to EUR 65 million from EUR 75 million. In contrast, the primary income account gap decreased to EUR 48 million from EUR 84 million.

Latvia recorded a trade deficit of EUR 464.4 million in June 2025, widening from EUR 332.1 million in the same month a year ago, as imports rose while exports fell. Year-on-year, imports increased by 5.4% to EUR 1,862.3 million, mainly driven by higher purchases of machinery & mechanical appliances (18.6%), vehicles and their equipment (12.3%), and chemical industry and related products (9.7%). Imports grew from the EU (5.2%) and other countries (26.9%), while it declined sharply from CIS countries (-64.9%). Meanwhile, exports dropped by 2.6% to EUR 1,397.9 million, primarily due to reduced sales of plant products (-27.9%), wood and its products, charcoal exports (-8.1%), and base metals and their products (-18.6%). Outbound shipments decreased to CIS (-0.1%) and other countries (-11.4%), while it increased to EU countries (0.1%).
