Peru’s central bank reduced its benchmark interest rate by 25 basis points to 4.75% during its January 2025 meeting, marking the lowest level since April 2022. This move follows a series of rate cuts, now totaling 300 basis points, that began in September 2023. In its statement, the board noted that global inflation is expected to slow toward the respective goals of most central banks, and in the case of some countries these goals have already been achieved. Domestic inflation also slowed to 2% in December from 2.3% in November, right at the center of the target range. Meanwhile, the bank highlighted signs of slowing economic activity, although the outlook remains optimistic. Looking ahead, the board remains especially attentive to new information regarding inflation and its determinants, reaffirming its commitment to adopt the necessary actions to maintain inflation within the target range.
