Evidence of higher underlying inflation in Canada drove markets to trim the magnitude of rate cuts to still be delivered this year by the BoC, with the closely-followed trimmed-mean core inflation rising to an over-one-year high. Also, retail sales rose sharply for a second month in April. Investors moved to price a hold in the central bank's upcoming June decision after the hot data, compared to bets of a 25bps cut from before the release.

In the meantime, Shopify advanced nearly 1%, tracking the tech sector as Nvidia's uplifting results supported tech across the globe.
