Kazakhstan’s economy expanded by 6.2% year-on-year for January - June 2025, marking the fastest growth rate since 2011, accelerating from 5.6% in the first three months of this year. Goods production rose by 8.0%, driven by strong performances in mining (8.4%), manufacturing (5.5%), and construction (18.4%). Meanwhile, the services sector grew by 5.2%, supported by wholesale and retail trade, including motor vehicle and motorcycle repair (8.4%), transport and assembly (22.7%), education (2.5%), financial and insurance activities (1.7%), and real estate services (1.4%).

Kazakhstan’s industrial production rose by 8.9% year-on-year in July 2025, accelerating from a 7.2% increase in the previous month. This marks the strongest expansion in industrial activity since February, driven by a stronger output increase in manufacturing (9.6% vs 3.1% in June) and electricity, gas, steam, hot water, and air conditioning supply (9.6% vs 2.8%). On the other hand, production growth slowed in the mining and quarrying sector (8.6% vs 11.8%), while it declined further for water supply, waste collection and treatment, and pollution (-16.4% vs -0.8%). On a monthly basis, industrial activity fell by 3.4% in July, slipping from a 2.7% advance in the preceding period. Considering the January to July period, industrial output was up 6.5% compared to the same period last year.

Kazakhstan’s short-term economic indicator—which tracks monthly GDP growth—rose by 9.3% year-on-year in the period from January to July 2025 from a 9% increase in the first six months of the year and a significant jump from 4.1% during the same period in 2024. It was the fastest pace of expansion since records began in 2008, fueled by strong performances in key sectors such as transport and storage (22.5%), construction (18.5%), wholesale and retail trade (8.6%), and mining and quarrying (8.5%). At the regional level, the highest growth rates were observed in Astana (19.1%), the Turkestan region (17.7%), and Shymkent (15.4%). In contrast, economic activity contracted in the East Kazakhstan region (-3.9%) and the Ulytau region (-0.4%).

The unemployment rate in Kazakhstan remained unchanged at 4.6% in Q2 2025, the same as in the previous three quarters. The number of unemployed individuals decreased by 2.2 thousand from a year earlier to 448.8 thousand, while the number of employed individuals increased by 110.1 thousand, reaching a total of 9.3 million.
