The annual inflation rate in Kazakhstan climbed to 11.3% in May 2025, the highest since September 2023, accelerating from 10.7% in the previous month, driven by faster price growth in food products (9.6% vs 8.5% in April), paid services (16.0% vs 15.7%), and non-food product inflation (9.0% vs 8.9%). On a monthly basis, consumer prices rose by 0.9%, the slowest pace in five months, easing from a 1.2% rise in the previous month.

Kazakhstan’s industrial production grew by 6.2% year-on-year in April 2025, marking the weakest pace in three months and slowing from an 8.5% increase in the previous month. Output growth moderated notably in manufacturing (2.9% vs 8.2% in March), while the decline in water supply, waste collection and treatment, and pollution elimination activities deepened (-6.3% vs -4.8%). In contrast, output for electricity, gas, steam, hot water, and air-conditioning supply returned to growth (2.4% vs -2.2%). Growth for mining and quarrying output remained steady (10.1% vs 10.2%). On a monthly basis, industrial production fell by 2.7% in April 2025, reversing a 6.8% increase recorded in the prior month.

Kazakhstan’s economy expanded by 5.6% year-on-year in the first quarter of 2025, marking the fastest growth rate since 2013. This compares with 4.8% growth for the full year of 2024 and a notable acceleration from 3.8% in the first quarter of 2024. Goods production rose by 7.7%, driven by strong performances in manufacturing (8.7%), mining (6.1%), and construction (16.9%). Meanwhile, the services sector grew by 4.5%, supported by wholesale and retail trade, including motor vehicle and motorcycle repair (6.3%), transport and storage (21.0%), education (2.2%), financial and insurance activities (1.7%), and real estate services (1.6%).

Kazakhstan’s short-term economic indicator—which tracks monthly GDP growth—rose by 8.5% year-on-year in the period from January to April 2025. This marked an acceleration from a revised 8.3% increase recorded in the first three months of the year and a significant jump from 3.9% during the same period in 2024. It was the fastest pace of expansion since 2010, fueled by strong performances in key sectors such as transport and warehousing (22.4%), construction (16.2%), trade (7.0%), and industry (6.6%). At the regional level, the highest growth rates were observed in Astana (22.5%), the Turkestan region (19.4%), Shymkent (19.4%), and the Zhetysu region (16.2%). In contrast, economic activity contracted in the East Kazakhstan region (-5.2%) and the Ulytau region (-3.2%).
