The FTSE 100 closed about 0.4% down at 8,259 on Tuesday, halting a three-day winning streak, in line with other European peers. Market sentiment faltered after a social media post by President-elect Donald Trump revealed plans for a 25% tax on all products entering the country from Canada and Mexico, and an additional 10% tariff on goods from China, to be enacted upon taking office. Meanwhile, traders awaited the release of the FOMC minutes later in the day for insights into the Fed's policy path. Among individual stocks, Intermediate Capital Group recorded the largest decline, down nearly 4%, followed closely by Beazley (-3.3%). Glencore and other mining stocks fell amid weaker copper prices, while Diageo, with production sites in Mexico, declined alongside other U.S.-exposed companies like Shell and JD Sports Fashion. On the flip side, Melrose Industries stood out with a nearly 8% surge after JP Morgan raised its target price to 850p from 650p, maintaining an "overweight" rating.

The gauge measuring retail sales volumes in the UK dropped by 18% in November of 2024, extending the 6% drop in October, and surpassing market expectations that it would fall by 14%, measured by the CBI Distributive Trades Survey. While the result reflected a moderate drop in retail, the survey also underscored a sharp decline in confidence in the sector. Overall sentiment for retailers for the next three months fell the most in two years, enough to make retailers expect a deterioration in annual sales ahead of the seasonally important December month. In turn, retailers are expected to reduce investment over the next year, and retail employment declined further. Also, selling price inflation eased and remained below the average for a third consecutive for the third consecutive quarterly survey.

The British pound gained some ground to approach $1.26, after tumbling to six-month lows early in the month, although investors remain cautious and assess the potential impact of a second Donald Trump administration. Trump doubled down on his threats to raise tariffs, mentioning a 10% tariff increase on China and a 25% hike on Mexico and Canada. Meanwhile, disappointing economic data for the UK increased bets for the Bank of England rate cuts. Retail sales fell by a bigger-than-expected 0.7% in October and flash PMIs also came below forecasts, pointing to a fractional decline in business activity during November. On the price front, annual inflation rate went up to 2.3% in October, the highest in six months, compared to 1.7% in September, exceeding both the BoE's target and market expectations of 2.2%. Most analysts expect the BoE to leave borrowing costs steady in December.
