UK car production fell 15.8% year-on-year in April 2025 to 59,203 units, as US tariffs and the timing of Easter disrupted manufacturing. Excluding 2020, when COVID-19 halted production, this marks the lowest April output since 1952. The decline was attributed to multiple factors, including fewer working days due to the later Easter holiday, which also contributed to the comparatively stronger figures in March. Additional pressures included model changeovers and weakening demand in key export markets. Exports, which account for the majority of UK car production, dropped 10.1%, while domestic production fell 3.3%. Shipments to the UK’s two largest overseas markets declined, with exports to the EU down 19.1% and to the US down 2.7%. Nevertheless, the EU remained the top destination, receiving over half of all exports, while the US accounted for 16.5%. In contrast, exports to China and Turkey saw strong growth, rising by 44.0% and 31.2%, respectively.
