Passenger car registrations in the European Union grew by 1.3% yoy to 925.359 units in April 2025, recovering from a 0.2% decline in March. This growth occurred despite the ongoing unpredictable global economic environment, with Spain leading the increase by rising 7.1%, followed by Italy (2.7%). By contrast, registrations fell in Belgium (-4.8%), Germany (-0.2%), and the Netherlands (-4%). In the battery electric vehicle (BEV) segment, registrations surged by 34.1%, driven notably by a significant increase in Germany, where registrations jumped 53.5%. For the first four months of 2025, overall car registrations fell by 1.2% yoy. However, new battery-electric car sales jumped by 26.4%, reaching 558,262 units and capturing 15.3% of the total EU market share. Three of the four largest markets in the EU - Germany (42.8%), Belgium (31.3%), and the Netherlands (6.4%), which together account for 63% of all BEV registrations, recorded robust gains. In contrast, France saw a decline of 4.4%.
