U.S. President Donald Trump and Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi signed a framework agreement on Tuesday to secure supplies of critical minerals and rare earths through mining and processing, the White House said. Signed during Trump’s visit to Japan, the deal aims to strengthen supply chains vital for sectors like renewable energy, electronics, and automotive manufacturing. Washington and Tokyo will use economic policy tools and joint investment to develop “diversified, liquid, and fair markets” for these resources. With China processing over 90% of global rare earths and tightening export controls, the U.S. is racing to reduce reliance. The agreement also includes plans to streamline permitting, address unfair trade practices, and explore joint stockpiling. Trump is set to meet Chinese President Xi Jinping on Thursday to discuss broader trade issues.
