Meanwhile, market participants prepared for a slew of US economic data and comments from Federal Reserve officials, which will play a key role in shaping the outlook for interest rates. On the domestic front, the latest BRC-KPMG retail sales monitor, covering the four weeks from 27 October to 23 November and thus not including Black Friday on 29 November, revealed a 3.3% year-on-year drop in sales. Among individual stocks, EasyJet surged over 3.5%, leading the index, while miners and banks also advanced. Housebuilders Vistry and Persimmon recovered from yesterday's losses following news of a new tax.

Retail sales in the United Kingdom dropped 3.4% on a like-for-like basis in November 2024, reversing four consecutive months of growth and falling short of market expectations for a 0.7% increase. Helen Dickinson, Chief Executive of the British Retail Consortium, attributed the decline to a combination of factors, including a later-than-usual Black Friday and weak consumer confidence, which led to reduced foot traffic. Storm Bert’s disruptions toward the end of the month further exacerbated the situation, particularly in northern cities. Every retail category experienced a decline, with shopping centres seeing the sharpest drop due to a significant fall in footfall. Geographically, Wales saw the largest downturn in retail turnover at 7.1%, followed by Scotland at 6.8%, England at 4.2%, and Northern Ireland at 2.8%.

The FTSE 100 nudged higher to close about 0.3% up at 8,313 on Monday, as investors digested a raft of economic data, including PMI surveys, while also eyeing the political turmoil in France. On the domestic front, a final PMI survey revealed UK's manufacturing activity contracted more than initially thought in November. A separate report showed house prices in the UK grew more than expected and at the fastest rate in nearly two years in November. Meanwhile, all eyes turn to BoE Governor Andrew Baliey's speech on Wednesday for more clues into the central bank's policy path. Among equities, the top performers included Howden Joinery (+2.8%), Rolls-Royce (+2.6%) and Spirax Group +2.4%). BAE Systems gained 2.3% after Citi reiterated its ‘buy’ recommendation on the shares. On the flip side, Vistry (-3.9%) and Persimmon (-1.3%) both slumped due to RBC Capital Markets' downgrade to 'underperform' and reports that the government plans to proceed with the Building Safety Levy.
