The FTSE 100 traded higher on Tuesday after President Donald Trump announced a ceasefire between Israel and Iran, easing geopolitical tensions. However, the index underperformed other European markets, weighed down by a sharp drop in energy and defensive stocks. BP and Shell declined about 5% and 3.6%, respectively, as oil prices fell on reduced supply concerns. Utilities and defense stocks also retreated, with BAE Systems down around 2%, reversing gains made during recent risk-off sentiment. In contrast, travel and banking stocks rallied. International Airlines Group and EasyJet surged about 7% each after Gulf states like Qatar and the UAE reopened their airspace and resumed flights. Financials also saw strong gains, with Barclays, Standard Chartered, and Prudential up around 3%.
