The S&P Global UK Services PMI was revised marginally higher to 49 in April 2025 from a preliminary of 48.9, but below March's 52.5. The latest figure signaled a return to contraction in business activity, bringing an end to 17 months of expansion. New business intake fell for the third time in four months, driven by a slowdown in business investment and lower client confidence due to US tariff announcements and the resulting market turmoil. Export sales were notably weak, with total new orders from abroad declining at the fastest pace since February 2021. Employment has declined for seven consecutive months, with a slight acceleration in job cuts since March, amid rising payroll costs. On the price front, input costs rose at the fastest pace since July 2023, which drove output charge inflation to its highest level in nearly two years.
Finally, business activity expectations for the year ahead declined sharply, with optimism falling to its lowest level since October 2022.
