The UK’s 10-year gilt yield rose to 4.48%, as markets adjusted expectations for future rate cuts, now anticipating around 62 basis points of cuts in 2025. This shift followed comments from Bank of England (BOE) policymaker Catherine Mann, who clarified that her recent vote for a 50 basis point cut was not a signal of immediate further cuts. Instead, she described her stance as “activist policymaker,” emphasizing the need for continued restrictive monetary policy to address persistent inflation challenges. The BOE had cut interest rates to 4.5% last week and downgraded its growth forecast for the year to 0.75%. Investors are now focused on key macroeconomic data this week, including GDP estimates for December, preliminary Q4 figures, and industrial and manufacturing output for December.

The British pound fell to $1.236, its lowest level in nearly three weeks, after BoE policymaker Catherine Mann stated that weak demand in the UK outweighs inflation risks. This shift in stance came after Mann transitioned from a hawkish to a dovish position at last week’s meeting. She noted that demand conditions in the UK are “quite a bit weaker” than before, which is dampening consumer spending and limiting companies' ability to raise prices, thereby easing inflationary pressures. The BoE expects inflation, which stood at 2.5% in December, to rise to 3.7% later in 2025. Meanwhile, the bank slashed its growth forecast for this year to 0.75% from the previous estimate of 1.5%. On the macroeconomic front, British investors are awaiting key data releases this week, including GDP estimates for December, preliminary Q4 figures, and industrial and manufacturing output for December.

The energy company reported lower-than-expected profits, as the company announced a strategy “reset” later this month and a review of its 2025 share buyback plans. Meanwhile, Entain dropped over 10%, the most since October, after CEO Gavin Isaacs stepped down immediately, raising concerns over leadership stability. The FTSE 250 slipped 0.2%, with homebuilder Bellway down nearly 7% due to flat pricing forecasts. On the FTSE All-Share, PZ Cussons surged 15%, its biggest jump since 1999, after raising guidance following a cost adjustment in its Nigerian unit.
