Thailand’s foreign tourist arrivals from January 1 to September 14, 2025, fell 7.08% compared to the same period last year to about 23 million visitors, the Tourism Ministry announced on Tuesday. Malaysia was the largest source market with 3.28 million visitors, followed closely by China with 3.23 million arrivals. In August, the state planning agency revised down its forecast for foreign tourist arrivals in 2025 to 33 million, from the earlier estimate of 37 million. This is still below the pre-pandemic record of nearly 40 million visitors in 2019. Recent economic data showed Thailand’s GDP grew 2.8% yoy in Q2 2025, easing from 3.2% growth in Q1. The accommodation and food services sector experienced notable weakness, expanding just 2.1% in Q2 compared to 7.2% in Q1, largely due to declining inbound tourism and slower domestic travel. Foreign tourist arrivals in Q2 totaled 7.136 million, down 12.2% yoy. Meanwhile, domestic tourism grew by 2.1%, a slowdown from 2.6% growth in Q1.

The Bank of Thailand and the Finance Ministry are considering a tax on gold traded online in baht, Bloomberg News reported, citing people familiar with the matter. The levy, aimed at slowing the baht’s rally that threatens exports and tourism, may exempt trades in U.S. dollars, on futures exchanges, or from bullion shops. Officials say the measure would curb gold exports and make domestic ownership costlier, as dollar inflows from bullion shipments have strengthened the currency. BoT officials will meet gold traders on Monday to discuss the metal’s impact and tighter reporting. Further talks with the Finance Ministry are planned, with a decision expected only after a new cabinet takes office. The tax, possibly a special business levy, could apply when sellers convert dollar proceeds into baht, though rates remain undecided.

The University of the Thai Chamber of Commerce’s consumer confidence index dropped to 50.1 in August 2025 from 51.7 in July. This marked the seventh straight month of decline and the lowest level since December 2022, amid concerns over a slow economic recovery, political instability, and US tariffs. Thailand’s state planning agency projects the country’s economy to expand by 1.8%-2.3% this year, compared to the 2.5% growth in 2024. Meanwhile, the US has lowered its tariff on imported goods from Thailand to 19% from 36%, though uncertainties remain over tariffs on transshipments through Thailand from third countries. University President Thanavath Phonvichai said that sentiment could improve under Thailand's new government, adding that the administration’s ability to deliver outstanding and tangible results would be crucial to reversing the decline in confidence.

Consumer prices in Thailand fell by 0.79% year-on-year in August 2025, a sharper drop than market expectations of a 0.70% decline and matching July’s pace. This marked the fifth consecutive month of deflation, and well below the central bank’s 1%–3% target range. Costs continued to decline across most categories, including transportation (-2.73% vs -3.87% in July), clothing and footwear (-1.07% vs -1.08%), and housing (-0.23% vs -0.23%). Deflation also persisted in healthcare (-0.93% vs -1.08%) and tobacco and alcoholic beverages (-0.09% vs -0.04%). At the same time, food and non-alcoholic beverage prices edged down 0.08%, reversing from a 0.84% increase in July. In contrast, recreation and culture went up 0.48% after a 0.47% increase a month earlier. Meanwhile, core consumer prices rose 0.81%, above forecasts of 0.75% but slightly easing from July’s 0.84% gain. On a monthly basis, consumer prices dipped 0.01%, compared to a 0.27% fall in the previous period.
