Thailand’s finance and commerce ministers will lead a delegation to the U.S. to seek relief from a planned 36% tariff under President Trump’s trade measures, a government spokesperson said on Monday. An advance team, led by Finance Minister Pichai Chunhavajira, will depart Thursday for meetings with private sector groups, with Commerce Minister Pichai Naripthaphan joining later. Talks with U.S. officials are expected on April 21. Thailand, which exported USD 55 billion to the U.S. last year, faces pressure over a USD 45.6 billion trade deficit. "The strategy will focus on industries of mutual interest, such as pet food, opening markets, and increasing U.S. imports," according to spokesperson Jirayu Houngsub. He also noted tighter inspections to prevent third-country circumvention. Thailand has previously pledged to increase U.S. imports, lower corn tariffs, and boost joint investments in the U.S.

The University of the Thai Chamber of Commerce’s consumer confidence index dropped to 56.7 in March 2025 from February’s 57.8, marking the second consecutive decline in consumer mood. The decline was driven by political instability and a fragile economic recovery. It was the lowest reading since last October amid a fragile economic recovery. In 2024, the GDP grew by 2.5%, below the official target of 2.7%. On the price front, Thailand's annual inflation eased to 0.84% in March, the first time below the central bank’s target range of 1% to 3%, after staying within the range for three consecutive months.

This figure came in below the central bank’s target range of 1% to 3%, after staying within the range for three consecutive months, as deflation persisted in most of the subindexes. Prices mainly fell for housing and furnishings (-0.63% vs. -0.52% in February), medical and personal care (-0.63% vs. -0.52%), and clothing and footwear (-0.43% vs. -0.32%). Transport costs also dropped 0.41%, following a 0.53% rise in the prior period. Meanwhile, inflation for food and non-alcoholic beverages rose more quickly (2.35% vs. 2.03%), the most heavily weighted component in the index. The annual core inflation rate, which excludes volatile items such as food and energy, slowed to 0.86% from 0.99% in February, falling short of the forecasted 1%. On a monthly basis, the CPI fell 0.2%, after inching 0.02% lower in the previous period.
