Imports to Taiwan rose 25.1% year-on-year to USD 41.86 billion in September 2025, slowing from a 29.5% increase in the previous month but surpassing market expectations of 22.55% growth. Stronger demand was seen in electronic parts (+42.7%), information and audio-video products (+70.0%), and machinery (+52.7%), despite a decline in mineral products (-11.3%), primarily due to a 9.6% drop in petroleum. Among key trading partners, imports from South Korea recorded the largest increase (+54.2%), followed by Europe (+34.1%), ASEAN (+23.9%), China & Hong Kong (+20.9%), the US (+20.3%), and Japan (+17.7%), while purchases from the Middle East declined (-3.7%). For the January–September period, total imports reached USD 353.41 billion, up 22.0% from a year earlier, while purchases from the US fell 2.3% compared with the same period last year.

Exports from Taiwan surged 33.8% year-on-year to USD 54.25 billion in September 2025, easing slightly from a 34.1% rise in the previous month and falling short of market expectations for a 35.5% gain. Growth was driven by strong demand for information, communication, and audio-video products (+86.9%), electronic parts (+25.6%), machinery (+5.0%), and chemicals (+1.8%), while shipments of base metals and articles of base metal (-1.7%) declined. By destination, exports to major markets posted robust increases, with shipments rising to the US (+51.6%), ASEAN (+34.0%), Europe (+27.3%), Japan (+23.3%), Korea (+23.3%), and China & Hong Kong (+12.8%). From January to September, total exports reached USD 452.68 billion, up 29.7% from a year earlier, including a 54.9% surge in shipments to the US.

Taiwan’s trade surplus widened to USD 12.40 billion in September from USD 7.10 billion a year earlier and below market expectations of a USD 15.66 billion surplus. Exports jumped 33.8% year-on-year to USD 54.25 billion, driven by strong growth in information, communication, and audio-video products (+86.9%) and electronic parts (+25.6%). Shipments rose to the US (+51.6%), ASEAN (+34.0%), Europe (+27.3%), Japan (+23.3%), and China & Hong Kong (+12.8%). Imports rose 25.1% to USD 41.86 billion, due to higher purchases of electronic parts (+42.7%), information and audio-video products (+70.0%), and machinery (+52.7%), despite a decline in mineral products (-11.3%). From January to September, Taiwan’s trade surplus totaled USD 99.27 billion, with exports up 29.7% and imports rising 22.0%.

The annual inflation rate in Taiwan fell to 1.25% in September, the lowest since March 2021, easing from 1.60% in August and well below the central bank’s 2% target. The moderation was driven by slower price growth in food (2.64% vs 3.18%), housing (1.61% vs 1.81%), education and entertainment (0.92% vs 1.28%), and miscellaneous goods and services (2.54% vs 2.57%), along with further declines in clothing (-0.93% vs -0.85%) and transportation and communication (-2.02% vs -1.34%). In contrast, prices rose faster in health (1.94% vs 1.75%). On a seasonally adjusted monthly basis, consumer prices increased 0.11% in September, slightly below the 0.12% gain in August.
