Retail sales in Taiwan declined by 0.6% year-on-year in April 2025, reversing a 0.4% increase in the previous month. The overall contraction was driven by weaker sales in motor vehicles and motorcycles (-5.2% vs -4.4%), textiles and clothing (-6.4% vs -5.6%), household appliances and goods (-2.6% vs 2.9%), information and communications equipment and electrical household appliances (-5.3% vs -0.6%), and fuel and related products (-5.1% vs -0.7%). In contrast, sales growth accelerated in food, beverages and tobacco (10.6% vs 4.4%), other retail (11.8% vs 6.2%), and cultural and recreation goods (0.1% vs -2.3%). On a monthly basis, retail sales fell by 2.1% in April, following a strong 10.5% gain in the previous month.
