Retail sales in Taiwan increased 1.1% year-on-year in August 2024, slowing from a revised 3.1% rise in the previous month. This marked the smallest gain in retail activity since December 2023, as declines were observed in sales of fuel and related products (-5.1% vs -4.4% in July), motor vehicles, motorcycles and related parts and accessories (-5% vs 14.1%), trade not in stores/stalls (-1.6% vs 2.9%), and cultural and recreation goods (-0.9% vs -10.8%). On the other hand, sales rose for food, beverages and tobacco (0.6% vs 0%), construction materials (11% vs 2.5%), information and communications equipment and electrical household appliances (2.8% vs 2.1%), and other goods (9.9% vs 6.5%). At the same time, sales rebounded for textiles and clothing (7.6% vs -4.1%), household appliances and goods (2% vs -2.1%), and pharmaceutical, medical goods and cosmetics (3% vs -1.6%). On a monthly basis, retail sales fell 3.2% in August, after a revised 0.4% gain in July.
