Retail sales in Taiwan rose 3.2% year-on-year in September 2024, accelerating from a 1.1% increase in the previous month. This marked the sharpest growth in three periods, driven by a faster increase in sales for general merchandise stores (4.7% vs 4.2% in August), and ICT equipment and electrical household appliances (3.8% vs 2.8%). Additionally, trade rebounded for motor vehicle, motorcycle and related parts (10.9% vs -5%) and trade not in stores or stalls (0.2% vs -1.6%). Meanwhile, sales mainly declined for food, beverages and tobacco (-4.3% vs 0.7%), fuel and fuel related products (-7.6% vs -5.1%), and cultural and recreational goods (-1.3% vs 0.9%). On a monthly basis, retail trade jumped 3%, following a 3.2% drop in August.
