Consumer confidence dropped sharply (89.8 vs 94.6 in February), reflecting significantly weaker sentiment compared to normal levels. Sentiment also deteriorated in the trade sector (103 vs 108.7), with firms in the grocery trade and motor vehicle trade being highly pessimistic. Similarly, confidence weakened in the services sector (97.9 vs 99.7), as businesses remained as dissatisfied with order volumes as they were in February. On a brighter note, confidence improved in the building and civil engineering sector (101.6 vs 98.6), as well as in the manufacturing industry (96.4 vs 95.6).

Sweden's business confidence barometer fell to 99.1 in March 2025 from a downwardly revised 101.2 in February, marking its lowest level since November 2024 but remaining near the historical average of 100. Companies remained pessimistic about the demand situation (-27 vs -27 in February) and struggled to forecast business conditions as they did six months ago. Additionally, employee numbers declined in the past three months (-3 vs -4) but at a slower pace. Looking ahead, hiring plans remain positive though slightly weaker than last month (4 vs 6) and sales price expectations over the next three months rose for four straight months (24 vs 22), driven mainly by the trade sector.

Sweden’s trade surplus increased to SEK 14.4 billion in February 2025 from SEK 11.2 billion in the same month of the previous year. This marks the second-largest trade surplus since 2009, as exports rose and imports fell. Exports grew by 1.0% year-on-year to SEK 174.1 billion, driven by a 7.0% rise in sales to non-EU countries, whereas shipments to EU countries declined by 3.7%. Meanwhile, imports fell by 0.9% to SEK 159.7 billion, with purchases from the EU decreasing by 1.6%, and those from non-EU countries rising by 0.6%. On a seasonally adjusted basis, the trade surplus increased to SEK 7.4 billion from SEK 6.1 billion in the previous month. Considering the first two months of the year, the trade surplus expanded to SEK 28.9 billion, compared to SEK 23.8 billion in the corresponding period of the previous year.
