The benchmark KOSPI climbed 1.7% to around 2,800 points on Thursday, its highest level in over 10 months, driven largely by a sharp rebound in semiconductor exports. Chip shipments surged 50.9% year-on-year to $13.4 billion, reflecting robust global demand for memory chips and advanced components. Investor sentiment was also lifted by optimism ahead of the APEC 2025 summit in Gyeongju, set for October 31–November 1, expecting to boost trade, attract foreign investment, and highlight South Korea’s tech capabilities. Meanwhile, major firms like Samsung Electronics, LG Electronics, and Hyundai Motor Group are increasing investment in humanoid robotics, aiming for global leadership by 2030. On the corporate front, SK Hynix (4.6%) and Samsung Electronics (1.3%) posted gains along with other firms such as Hanwha Aerospace (4.3%), and Hyundai Motor (1.6%) posted gains, while KB Financial Group (-3.1%), Shinhan Financial Group (-2.3%), and HD Hyundai Heavy Industries (-1%) saw losses.
