This move came amid sustained optimism over easing US-China trade tensions. Domestically, investors digested latest data showing South Korea’s jobless rate fell to 2.7% in April from 2.9% in March, matching February’s level. While nearly 200,000 jobs were added, manufacturing employment, considered the backbone of the economy, saw its sharpest annual drop in over six years. Among index heavyweights, chip stocks led the charge, with Samsung Electronics rising 0.9% after acquiring German ventilation firm FlaktGroup for €1.5 billion, its largest deal in eight years. Meanwhile, Nvidia supplier SK Hynix climbed 2.8% after its US peer announced a major AI chip deal with Saudi Arabia. Notable gains extended to shipbuilders, such as Hyundai Heavy Industries (1.7%), Korea Shipbuilding (1.8%), and Samsung Heavy Industries (2.2%).
