The benchmark KOSPI fell 0.6% to around 2,464 points on Wednesday, reversing gains from the previous session, as chipmakers tracked overnight declines in US peer Nvidia. The tech giant dropped roughly 6% in after-hours trading after disclosing a $5.5 billion quarterly charge related to export restrictions on its chip sales to China and other countries. Meanwhile, South Korea moved to strengthen shipbuilding and energy ties with the US ahead of upcoming tariff negotiations, aiming to gain leverage during the 90-day grace period. Among index heavyweights, chip giant Samsung Electronics dropped 1.7%, while its rival SK Hynix shed 3.1%. Other notable losses were seen from steelmakers, including Korea Zinc (-1%) and Hyundai Steel (-0.4%), after Trump launched a probe into potential tariffs on critical minerals.
