Shares in New Zealand fell 44 points or 0.3% to 12,870 during Wednesday's morning session, ending gains in the previous three sessions. The decline followed Wall Street's Dow Jones posting its longest losing streak since 1978, ahead of the US Fed's widely anticipated rate decision later today. Traders adopted a cautious stance ahead of New Zealand's Q3 GDP release in the coming days. The economy is forecast to contract by 0.4% qoq, potentially in recession. Further losses were curbed as local data showed that consumer mood in the Pacific nation reached a three-year high in Q4 of 2024, after widespread pessimism over the past few years. Meantime, New Zealand's current account deficit narrowed slightly in Q3, aligning with market estimates at NZD 10.58 billion. Consumer durables weighed heavily on the NZX 50, along with declines in producer manufacturing and retail trade. Third Age Health Services fell by 3.9%, followed by Vista Group Intl. (-2.0%), and Gentrack Group Ltd. (-1.5%).
