The NZX 50 rose 25 points or 0.2%, to 12,051 in Thursday morning trade, marking a second straight session of gains and reaching a two-month high. The advance came after the Fed’s widely expected decision to keep U.S. interest rates unchanged Wednesday, amid ongoing concerns about the economic impact of President Trump's tariffs. In China, New Zealand’s largest trading partner, the central bank cut its benchmark rate and injected liquidity into the financial system to support growth and cushion trade-related risks. However, further gains were capped by a warning from the RBNZ that financial system risks in New Zealand have grown over the past six months due to global market volatility and broad U.S. levies. Meanwhile, caution emerged ahead of key April data from China, including trade performance and CPI/PPI figures. Leading sectors included tech services, retail trade, and consumer services, with notable gains from Gentrack Group (2.9%), Ryman Healthcare (2.0%), and A2 Milk Co. (1.6%).
