New Zealand’s benchmark S&P/NZX 50 fell 0.2% to close at 13,093 on Tuesday, giving back some gains from the previous session, weighed down by losses in utilities stocks. Investors also grew cautious amid rising trade tensions between the US and New Zealand’s largest trading partner, China. The US announced new restrictions on China's access to critical components for chips and AI, following Trump’s renewed threat to impose 100% tariffs on BRICS nations, including China. Among utilities stocks, Meridian Energy dropped 1.6%, while peer Infratil lost 2.3%, and Contact Energy declined 1.8%. Other index heavyweights also fell, including Ebos (-0.3%), Fonterra (-0.9%), and A2 Milk Co (-0.6%). In economic news, New Zealand's terms of trade increased more than expected in Q3, as export prices rose and import prices declined.
