Japan will not rule out countermeasures against the Trump administration’s 25% tariff on U.S. car imports, Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba said Thursday in parliament. He stressed the need to protect Japan’s national interests, arguing that as the largest investor in the U.S., Japan should not be treated the same as other nations. The tariff, set to take effect on April 2, applies to all non-U.S.-made cars, despite Japan’s diplomatic efforts, including increased investments and energy purchases, to secure an exemption. Government spokesman Yoshimasa Hayashi called the move “highly regrettable,” reiterating Japan’s strong opposition. Still, analysts expect the economic impact to be limited, as Japanese automakers remain competitive under the broad application of the tariff.
