Japan’s 10-year government bond yield fell to 1.46%, the lowest level in about a week, and the 30-year yield edged down to 2.88% after demand for a 30-year bond auction turned out better than anticipated. Earlier in the week, a 10-year bond auction also drew solid demand, helping to ease pressure on the broader bond market. In late May, yields had surged, with the 10-year approaching levels last seen in 2008 and the 30-year hitting record highs, as investors grew increasingly concerned about the sustainability of the government's borrowing plans amid the Bank of Japan’s gradual withdrawal from the bond market. In response to the sharp rise in yields, reports indicate the Ministry of Finance is considering scaling back issuance of super-long bonds. Meanwhile, BoJ Governor Kazuo Ueda has signaled that the central bank is likely to continue reducing the pace of JGB purchases in the next fiscal year.
