The FTSE MIB closed 1.2% higher at 37,888 on Tuesday, outperforming other major European indices amid another strong session for banks, the top sector of the index. Mediobanca surged over 5% to reach a record high, extending the rally from the previous session as markets continued to assess the likelihood that it will successfully swap its shares in Generali for a stake of Banca Generali. The eventual acquisition of the insuring giant's wealth management arm would prevent Banca Monte dei Paschi Siena's takeover of Mediobanca, which lifted the former's shares by over 4% in the session, while Banca Generali added 2%. Other lenders also advanced, with Intesa Sanpaolo, UniCredit, and BPER Banca adding more than 1.3%. Among other sectors, Leonardo and Telecom Italia rounded the best performers of the session, adding more than 2% each.

Industrial sales in Italy fell by 0.4% month-over-month in February 2025, following a downwardly revised 3.7% increase in January. The decline was driven by a drop in domestic orders (-1.3%), partially offset by a rise in foreign sales (+1.2%). Among major industrial groupings, orders fell for intermediate goods (-1.1%) and consumer goods (-2.7%), while capital goods (+2.5%) and energy (+0.2%) recorded gains. On a yearly basis, industrial sales declined by 1.5%, reversing a revised 1.8% growth in the previous period. However, in the three months from December to February, industrial sales rose by 0.8%.

The manufacturing confidence index in Italy fell to 85.7 in April 2025 from 86.0 in the previous month, slightly above market expectations of 85.4. This marked the lowest reading since November 2020, as production expectations declined while assessments of inventories remained unchanged. Meanwhile, views on orders improved. In the construction sector, expectations for employment worsened, although judgments on orders remained stable.
