Italy’s trade surplus widened to EUR 5.153 billion in October 2024, up from EUR 4.732 billion in the same month last year, significantly exceeding the expected EUR 3.22 billion. This marks the largest trade surplus in three months, as exports grew faster than imports. Year-on-year, exports rose by 1.6%, with sales increasing to EU countries (+3.7%) but declining to non-EU countries (-0.7%). Turkey recorded the most notable export growth (+33.5%), followed by the UK (+10.8%) and Belgium (+10.3%). Among products, shipments increased for sporting goods (+35.8%), food, beverages, and tobacco (+10.5%), and pharmaceutical and chemical products (+11.5%). Meanwhile, imports edged up 0.4%, as a decline in purchases from non-EU countries (-4%) nearly offset higher arrivals from EU countries (+3.9%). Considering January to October, the trade surplus rose to EUR 45 billion from EUR 24.6 billion in the corresponding period in the prior year.
