The BSE Sensex closed about 0.3% lower at 77,415 on the last trading session of the financial year 2024-25 (FY 25), reversing gains from the prior session, as traders opted to secure profits amid uncertainties over Trump tariffs. US President Donald Trump is due to announce reciprocal tariffs on several trading partners, including India, on April 2. The session experienced widespread losses, led by US-exposed IT stocks. Auto shares lost 1%, driven by a 2.5% loss in Mahindra & Mahindra ahead of the release of March sales data next week. Meanwhile, the FMCG sector showed resilience, with Kotak Mahindra Bank, Hindustan Unilever, ICICI Bank, Tata Motors, Nestle and Bharti Airtel among the top gainers. Indian benchmarks rose about 5% in the fiscal year. For the month, the Sensex added 0.7%, buoyed by renewed foreign inflows amid optimism about domestic economic data. Indian markets will be closed on Monday, March 31, for Eid festivities, and trading will resume on Tuesday, April 1, 2025.
