India's BSE Sensex closed marginally down at 81,373.75 on the first trading day of June, marking the second consecutive session of losses, pressured by declines in metal and IT stocks. President Donald Trump’s warning of a potential 50% tariff hike on imported steel and aluminum, effective June 4, reignited global trade worries and weighed heavily on market sentiment. This was further compounded by volatile foreign institutional investor flows, and nervousness ahead of the Reserve Bank of India’s monetary policy meeting. On the domestic data front, India's manufacturing sector growth was revised lower to a three-month low in May. Among the top movers, Tech Mahindra, Tata Steel, Tata Motors, and Infosys saw losses of up to 1.5%, while profit taking in heavyweights such as HDFC Bank and Reliance Industries added to the pressure. However, buying interest occurred in select stocks including Adani Ports, M&M, Eternal (Zomato), PowerGrid, Bajaj Finserv, ITC, Asian Paints, and Nestle India.
