Among trading partners, imports grew the most from Malaysia (32.4%), USA (23.1%), and the Philippines (21.7%). Considering the first ten months of the year, imports were 6.8% higher compared to the corresponding period last year.

Exports from Hong Kong rose 3.5% year-on-year to $393 billion in October 2024, slowing from a 4.7% gain in the previous month. This marked eighth consecutive month of rising exports activity albeit the weakest in the sequence, as exports growth eased significantly for office machines and automatic data processing machines (4.5% vs 52.8% in September). Additionally, exports growth continued to fall for miscellaneous manufactured articles (-18.2% vs -14.4%) and non-metallic mineral manufacturers (-32.4% vs -11.1%), while it slipped sharply for non-ferrous metals (-20% vs 4.2%). Among major destinations, shipments went up Vietnam (31.3%), China (8.6%), and the USA (5.8%). In contrast, shipments declined most to India (-34.3%) and the UAE (-20%). For the first ten months of the year, exports were 9.9% higher compared to the corresponding period last year.

Imports grew by 4.5% year-on-year to $424 billion, primarily attributed to higher purchases of office machines and automatic data processing machines (+36.6%), professional, scientific and controlling instruments and apparatus +17.1%), and power generating machinery and equipment (+14.8%). Meanwhile, exports increased at a softer 3.5% from a year earlier to $393 billion, mainly due to higher sales of power generating machinery and equipment (+25.9%) and electrical machinery, apparatus and appliances, and electrical thereof (+10.4%). However, exports declined sharply for non-metallic mineral manufactures (-32.4%) and non-ferrous metals (-20%). Considering the first ten months of the year, the country’s trade deficit was $301.7 billion, with exports growing by 9.9% and imports rising by 6.8% compared to the same period a year earlier.
