The GfK Consumer Climate Indicator for Germany rose to -21.2 heading into October 2024 from a marginally revised -21.9 in the previous period. The latest figure was above market forecasts of -21.5, mainly helped by increases in both income expectations (10.1 vs 3.5 in September) and the propensity to buy (-6.9 vs -10.9). Meanwhile, economic prospects declined for the second straight month (0.7 vs 2.0), and the tendency to save increased further. "...the slight improvement in the consumer climate can be interpreted as stabilization at a low level, ... not the beginning of a noticeable recovery," said Rolf Bürkl, a consumer expert at NIM. He explained that the current mood among consumers remains unstable due to several headwinds, such as rising inflation, increasing unemployment, a rise in corporate bankruptcies, and potential job cuts across many businesses.
