For the first two months of the year, car registrations dropped by 3% compared to the same period in 2024, with declines in Italy (-6%), Germany (-4.6%), and France (-3.3%). During this period, new battery-electric car sales grew by 28.4%, reaching 255,489 units and capturing 15.2% of the total EU market share. Three of the four largest markets in the EU, accounting for 64% of all battery-electric car registrations, saw double-digit growth, with Germany (41%), Belgium (38%), and the Netherlands (25%).

Spain led the gain with a sharp 28.8% surge, followed by France, with a modest rise (1.5%). However, among the four largest EU markets, declines were observed in Germany (-7.1%) and Italy (-4.9%). In the battery electric vehicles (BEVs) segment, registrations fell by 10.2% to 144,367 units, with their market share standing at 15.9%, due to a significant decrease in registrations in Germany (-38.6%) and France (-20.7%). For the full year 2024, overall car registrations rose 0.8% year-on-year to around 10.6 million units. Spain continued to show resilience with a solid 7.1% growth rate. Meanwhile, the slumps in BEV registrations in Germany and France led to a 5.9% drop in market volume for 2024 compared to 2023. As a result, the total market share for battery-electric cars stood at 13.6% for 2024.

For the first eleven months of 2024, overall car registrations rose 0.4% year-on-year to 9.7 million units. During the period, the registrations for new battery-electric cars shrank by 5.4%, with the total market shares at 13.4%.
